Kelly Peters, master teacher and choreographer,
was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Having won an adult dance contest at
the tender age of four, Kelly sensed at an early age that dancing would
define him. He achieved professional dance status while in junior high
by being chosen to perform and later choreograph for the nationally
ranked soccer team the St. Louis Steamers . Kelly also
appeared live in concert with Herbie Hancock. Two years in a row, Kelly
and his Boogaloo Crew were televised on the Jerry Lewis Telethon performing to raise money for Jerry's Kids.
Dancing
wasn't enough for Kelly, he flew off to the Cambridge Drama Center at
Cambridge University in England for two years where he immersed himself
in theater and acting classes. Itching to make a living with his newly
acquired skills, he relocated to New York City where he pounded the
pavement for awhile. Later, a friend fortuitously introduced him to an
acquaintance who recognized Kelly's talents and had him cast in a
myriad of music videos with artists Naughty by Nature , The Fugees and Human League ,
to name a few. Kelly's face became popular in the Big Apple where he
was approached by promoter Derrick Corley who asked Kelly to host
weekly celebrity bashes and events at various clubs in Manhattan.
Kelly's magnetic personality, led him to host Mile Preshay's nationally
syndicated show "Watch This".
In 2000,
Kelly's path brought him to Martha's Vineyard where he began to teach
hip hop and break dancing to the Vineyard Community. He began planting
his roots and committed to immersing his burgeoning number of students
in the moves and philosophy of authentic hip hop. The more tranquil
lifestyle of the Vineyard compelled Kelly to reach inside himself and
realize that through the medium of hip hop (the number one influence on
pop culture today), he could make a contribution to the world by
connecting with our future, the hip hop generation.
In
June 2002, a mere year and a half after he began teaching on Martha's
Vineyard, Kelly opened up the first hip hop studio in New England.
Here, under one roof, he taught over twelve classes a week. He also has
a very committed crew of junior high and high school dancers who travel
extensively executing performances choreographed by Kelly. Kelly and
members of his dance team traveled to Philadelphia where they spent ten
days training with pioneers of hip hop and break dance, learning
authentic moves from their creators. Legends such as Boogaloo Sam,
Crazy Legs and Don Campbell taught Kelly's students the proper manner
of Campbell Lockin, Poppin and Boogalooin. Rennie Harris, the director
of the Philadelphia workshops, honored Kelly by recognizing him as a
hip hop innovator and by inviting him to teach some of his material.
Kelly's
dancers have performed at the Cape Cod Ballet, Six Flags, The
Children's Museum of Manhattan and have made numerous Television
appearances including the CBS Early Show. This group is up and coming
under the gentle guidance of Kelly Peters whose ultimate mission is to
spread peace, positive energy and love. Right now it's through hip hop
but looking back to where Kelly has been, these kids could go far, but
will it be hip hopping, breaking, acting or hosting their own
nationally syndicated show? Under the direction of Kelly Peters,
anything is possible.
Wanting to reach a
broader audience, in 2003 Kelly teamed up with Emmy award winning
producer Peter Temple who thought that Kelly's natural teaching ability
and his "One Step at a Time" technique would combine to make an
exceptional instructional DVD. Kelly and Peter developed the MAKE IT
HAPPEN series and have already produced two DVD's: MAKE IT HAPPEN: Hip Hop Volume 1 kicks off the beginner series and MAKE IT HAPPEN: Freestyle Volume 1
is the first in an intermediate series featuring Kelly's original
choreography. In November 2005, Kelly signed with BayView Entertainment
for national distribution of the MAKE IT HAPPEN: Hip Hop Volume 1 DVD .
As
a choreographer, Kelly and his innovative "outside the box" style of
choreography, is managed by Triiiple Threat Entertainment. Recently
Kelly has choreographed for recording artists Carly Simon, IQ and C
Note, among others and Kelly's choreography was featured in the Hip Hop
Gospel musical "Moses" an off Broadway production that premiered at the
Alvin Ailey Performance Center in Manhattan.
The
demand for Kelly's unique choreography and teaching style has Kelly
traveling six days a week. Kelly splits his time between teaching
master classes, workshops and performances with his dance crew. Kelly
believes in promoting and preserving what he believes is the true
essence of the Hip Hop culture. Kelly lives by his motto P.E.A.C.E.
(Positive Energy Activates Constant Elevation) and this he believes, is
his contribution to the world. |
